How To Spring Clean Your Beauty Routine

“From the moment you start tidying, you will be compelled to reset your life. As a result, your life will start to change. That’s why the task of putting your house in order should be done quickly. " - Marie Kondo

Spring is well and truly here and the warmer seasons are upon us! If you’ve been putting off your spring cleaning for a while, now is the perfect time to finally detox your beauty routine. The benefits of Marie Kondo-ing your creams and sunscreens? One, there’s the obvious decluttering that will leave you more space in your cabinets and drawers (always a good thing!). But two- we’ll let you in on a little secret - you really don’t need that much to have an effective skincare routine. It’s all about using what you know works for you, and chucking out the unnecessary

Don’t know where to start? We’ve got you covered.

Throw out expired products

Ever pulled out a moisturiser that has a funky smell? Or gone to apply mascara that’s dried up completely? We’ve all been there, and we totally understand… it’s hard to part ways with a half-used lipstick you bought a couple years ago. However, using expired products isn’t doing your skin any favours and in fact, might actually cause irritation or even an infection.

One of the first things you should look out for is the expiration date or PAO. The expiration date is pretty self explanatory (the date shown is when it expires) but PAO is a bit more confusing. PAO stands for Period After Opening, and is usually shown as a number followed by an M and an open jar icon. This tells you how many months after opening a product, it should be thrown away. For example, a 12M means you should throw the product out after 12 months of opening it.

Here’s a basic rule for when it’s time to toss out your products. Of course, this is not a 100% sure bet but just a guide.

  • Mascara and eyeliner:  3 to 6 months
  • Cream, liquid or stick foundations/concealers: 6 months to a year
  • Powder-based products (including blush, bronzer, finishing powder, etc.): 2 to 3 years
  • Lipstick, gloss and lip pencils: 2 to 3 years

  • Cleansers: 1 year
  • Toners: 6 months to a year
  • BHA or AHA exfoliants: 1 year
  • Facial or body moisturisers and serums: 6 months to a year
  • Lip balm: 1 year

Clean your makeup applicators

Spring cleaning is the perfect excuse to start a regular makeup tool cleaning routine, as well as throw out applicators when required. Some experts recommend that you should clean your makeup brushes and brushes every single week. This is because a large amount of bacteria and grime can build up on these applicators.

Cleaning your makeup applicators doesn’t require any fancy cleaners. Just use a non-toxic soup or even a facial cleanser. Try keeping a weekly schedule, your skin will thank you!

Swap winter skincare for spring skincare

A change in season is a great time to switch out products based on the season. If your winter cream is thick and protective, such as the C+ Eczema and Dermatitis Cream, you may want to switch out for a lighter formula like the Anti-aging Daily Face Cream. Of course, this depends on your skin and it’s needs.

If you don’t have sunscreen in your daily skincare routine, then right now is the perfect time to add in a safe and natural sunscreen. Our SunClear SPF40 Natural Sunscreen is a natural physical sunscreen containing microfine zinc oxide. It’s SPF 40, vegan, 2 hours water resistant, reef friendly, suitable for the entire family (including people with eczema, rosacea, psoriasis and sensitive skin) and best of all, it doesn’t leave a white cast on the skin!

Great skin starts from within

There’s a lot of focus from dermatologists and skincare gurus about the correct face washes, creams, and serums that are needed to get flawless skin. However, what you put into your body is just as important to achieving your desired results.

Many of us are taught from a young age that taking care of our skin starts from what we put on it. Mega oil proves that this isn’t always the case. Mega Oil is one of the unknown gems of great skin care. The internally ingested oil contains fatty acids such as Omega 3, 6 and 9 that are known to improve the skin by maintaining its healthy appearance. Omega 3 has been known to significantly improve inflammation in the body, while Omega 6 and 9 have been shown to improve the skin's appearance by providing essential hydration to create a smooth protective barrier.

Fatty Omega oils are essential to the body as the body cannot make them on its own and have many great benefits outside of the skin. Omega oils combined with the multitude of rich nourishing oils in Mega Oil can also help in gut issues that can contribute to some skin disorders or problems such as psoriasis and eczema.

Replace toxic products

Spring cleaning is the perfect time to treat yourself and your skin. If you’ve never detoxed your beauty cabinet before, you may think of it as a daunting task. If you have a huge skincare and makeup collection, a good course of action is splitting up your collection into smaller sections.

Go through each of  the following categories, and make sure the products you keep are safe and non-toxic:

  • Skincare
  • Makeup
  • Hair care
  • Body washes and lotions
  • Hygiene products like deodorant
  • Nail products
